Best Wedding Photographer in North Wales

I’ve got some exciting news…

So, down in Swansea…The heart of Wales, the Welsh National Wedding Awards take place each year, and are currently hosted by designer David Emanuel. Probably best known for designing Princess Diana’s wedding dress. It’s quite a big deal in our industry. Guess what? I bagged the title of Best Wedding Photographer in North Wales not once, not twice, but three times! Yep, 2019, 2022, and 2023 were the golden years. (Side note: 2020 and 2021 took a hiatus thanks to our good friend, the pandemic.)

Stepping out of my usual professional gear into some snazzy formal wear during the awards ceremony was a refreshing change. Plus, it meant rubbing elbows with some fantastic industry friends and sharing a meal that was a definite upgrade from my usual desk lunch.

These awards aren’t just about snapping awesome shots. They take into account top-notch customer service, giving couples value for money, and injecting an artistic touch into every image. And thanks to the couples who cast their votes based on their experiences, for the judges to assess.

But wait, there’s more! In 2023, not only did I nab the North Wales Wedding Photographer title again, but I also got the unexpected honour of being crowned Best Wedding Photographer in the whole of Wales. What a shock that was! Especially after enjoying a few celebratory tequilas after winning the North Wales title.

Expressing gratitude feels like an understatement for the love and recognition received. It’s not just about the awards; it’s about the stories captured in each photograph, the trust couples place in me, and the chance to contribute to their everlasting tales.

Here’s to more magic and moments,

Local Wedding Photographer in North Wales

Planning a wedding is an exciting and joyous time, filled with decisions that will shape your special day. Among the many choices you’ll make, one of the most important is finding a skilled wedding photographer. The picturesque landscapes of North Wales provide an ideal backdrop for capturing unforgettable moments. In this post, I will guide you through the process of finding a local North Wales wedding photographer who can expertly document your love story. Stepping into the scene in 2012, my journey as a wedding photographer has been nothing short of extraordinary. With hundreds of weddings captured, I stand before you today, armed with a wealth of experience that will bring your love story to life.

Research the Local Market:

Local wedding photographer in North Wales

Begin your search by familiarizing yourself with the local wedding photography market in North Wales. Utilize online platforms, such as wedding directories, social media, and search engines, to find a comprehensive list of establised wedding photographers in the area. Take note of their styles, portfolios, and any reviews or testimonials from previous couples.

Define Your Style, Your Wants and Your Needs:

Local wedding photographer in North Wales

Every couple has a unique vision for their wedding, and finding a photographer who can match your style and preferences is crucial. Determine the kind of photography style that resonates with you – whether it’s classic, photojournalistic, candid, or a blend of different styles. Check out the editing. You may prefer a vibrant look, or perhaps a more muted approach. Neither is wrong, but define what style you love. Look for photographers whose portfolios reflect your desired aesthetic and storytelling approach.

Seek Recommendations:

Local wedding photographer in North Wales

Reach out to friends, family, or even your wedding venue for recommendations. Personal referrals often come with the added benefit of firsthand experiences and genuine feedback. They can provide insights into the photographer’s professionalism, creativity, and ability to blend seamlessly into the wedding day. A word of warning… If you ask for wedding photographer recommendations in a wedding Facebook group, you are only going to be spammed with photographers putting themselves forward. Rarely you will receive genuine recommendations from these groups.

Book Meetings and Catchups:

Horseshoe Pass Wedding Photos

Once you have a shortlist of potential photographers, book in meetings or zoom calls to get to know them better. In-person meetings or calls allow you to assess their personality, professionalism, and passion for their craft. This interaction will help you determine if they are someone you feel comfortable with, as they will be present throughout your entire wedding day.

Review Their Portfolios:

Local wedding photographer in North Wales

During the meetings, ask the photographers to share their portfolios or sample wedding albums. Pay attention to the consistency of their work, the emotions captured, and the quality of their images. Look for attention to detail, creativity, and an ability to capture genuine moments. A strong portfolio indicates their experience and expertise in documenting weddings.

Discuss Packages and Pricing:

Soughton Hall Wedding Photos

Wedding photography packages vary in terms of coverage, prints, albums, and additional services. Discuss pricing details upfront to ensure it aligns with your budget. Don’t hesitate to ask about any hidden costs or potential extras. Keep in mind that hiring an experienced professional photographer is an investment, and quality should be a priority.

Check Genuine Reviews:

Local wedding photographer in North Wales

To gain a deeper understanding of a photographer’s reputation, check reviews from previous couples. Google reviews is a good place to do your research, as these reviews are usually verified. These insights can help you make a well-informed decision.

Check for Flexibility and Adaptability:

Smoke Bomb Wedding Photos

Weddings can be unpredictable, and it’s essential to find a photographer who can adapt to any situation. Enquire about their ability to handle different lighting conditions, various venues, and unexpected challenges. A flexible photographer will ensure that your memories are captured flawlessly, and adapt to any unforeseen circumstances.

Finding the perfect North Wales wedding photographer is a vital step in creating lifelong memories of your special day. By conducting thorough research, seeking recommendations, and reviewing portfolios, you can narrow down your options and find a photographer whose style resonates with you. Remember to book meetings, discuss pricing, and assess their flexibility and adaptability. With a skilled and experienced professional by your side, you can relax and enjoy your wedding day, knowing that every precious moment will be captured beautifully for generations to come.

Bridal Prep

Juan and Elizabeth’s wedding was a beautiful blend of Spanish passion and Welsh hospitality. The two of them met whilst Elizabeth was working, and their love story was nothing short of a fairy tale. On a Summer’s day in North Wales, they exchanged vows at Gresford church and celebrated their love with family and friends at Tyn Dwr Hall.

The day began at Elizabeth’s family home in Gresford, where she was getting ready surrounded by her closest friends and family. Juan, meanwhile, was getting ready with his family, who had flown in from Spain especially for the wedding.

Gresford Church Wedding Ceremony

The wedding ceremony at Gresford church was a beautiful and emotional affair. Juan’s family had brought with them the Spanish traditions and customs, which added a unique and special touch to the ceremony. As Juan and Elizabeth said I do, the church was filled with huge applause and chants of “vivan los novios” which I believe translates to “Long live the Bride and Groom”.

After the ceremony, the guests made their way to Tyn Dwr Hall for the reception. The venue was beautifully decorated with many Spanish touches such as the table names and one of the Tyn Dwr Hall chefs carving a Serrano ham leg.

Speeches in the Garden Room at Tyn Dwr Hall

The speeches were all made in the Garden Room at Tyn Dwr Hall, and it was a lovely moment to see Elizabeth’s Dad had not only written his speech in English, but he had also had it translated to Spanish which he delivered perfectly on the day.

Party Time!

The party really started when Juan and Elizabeth took to the dance floor for their first dance. Elizabeth had a special surprise in store for Juan – a recording of her singing Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” in Spanish was played, much to the delight of Juan and their guests.

The rest of the night was filled with dancing and partying. The Spanish know how to party hard, and that was evident in the energy and excitement in the room.

Juan and Elizabeth’s wedding was a true celebration of love and culture, and their guests left Tyn Dwr Hall feeling inspired and uplifted. The happy couple started their new life together with a wonderful celebration, surrounded by family, friends, and the beautiful North Wales countryside.

Tyn Dwr Hall was the perfect setting for Juan and Elizabeth’s special day, and the memories they created will stay with them forever. This wedding was a true testament to the power of love and the importance of bringing together different cultures and traditions to create a truly unforgettable experience.

Kind Words from Elizabeth and Juan

“STOP YOUR SEARCH! Just book Richard Miller! Trust me, you will have zero regrets!

Within a minute of him arriving to my bridal prep, I knew we’d made the right choice! He was relaxed, genuine, funny and slotted in perfectly, making everyone feel at ease! He got on so well with all the bridal party!

During all the photos throughout the day, Rich made us feel relaxed and we had so much fun. We don’t usually particularly like having our photographs taken, so the fact he made us feel so at ease was brilliant! It is blindingly obvious that he is incredible at what he does, so this allows you to just enjoy the experience.

He mingled so well with all family and friends and got everyone involved in the photos!

We received our photos yesterday after a really professional process. We are absolutely over the moon with them and couldn’t have hoped for anything more! He captured our day perfectly. The day feels like such a blur afterwards and you worry that certain people weren’t photographed or certain moments may have been lost, but no, Rich captured it all!!

All I can say is that he is FULLY worth the money. A brilliant guy to work with and photos that are so amazingly done and such high quality. Thank you Rich! We hope to work with you again in the future!”

Hafod Farm is a venue I have had the pleasure of photographing a few times now, but when I arrived for Tom and Sioned’s wedding In October 2019, I was amazed by all the effort that the owners had gone to since the last time I visited. A new barn has been built with some lovely rustic touches, such as a huge wall of mirrors (not like a fun house… you’ll see what I mean in the pictures).

I made the journey through North Wales to Hafod Farm where Sioned and her bridal party were getting ready. The weather wasn’t quite on our side but as is always the way with North Wales weddings, you make the most with what you have. As always, the beatiful bride was calm, relaxed and ready to make that march down the aisle.

Hafod Farm Wedding Ceremony

Hafod Farm Wedding Photographer

The old barn at Hafod Farm is always beautifully decorated with many candles and subtle lights around the beams. Although a slighly challenging area to photograph due to not much daylight coming through the windows and the high ceilings, it is still one of my favourite wedding ceremony areas to photograph.

Sioned made her way down the aisle as she followed her bridesmaids where Tom waited and even shed a tear! Photographers love it when a groom shows genuine emotion!! I’m sure Sioned did too.

The ceremony was full of laughter and smiles as the bride and groom said I do, and then it was outside for confetti before the rain started.

Once we had photographed all the family portraits inside the new barn, I took Tom and Sioned away so they could have some time alone, and also give us chance to make a start on their couples portraits. We even had an appearance from one of the dogs who lives at Hafod Farm! We were dodging the typical North Wales showers, but still managed to get some lovely photos.

The Wedding Breakfast and Speeches

So I mentioned earlier how much I loved the new barn at Hafod Farm and all the personal touches. It really is a lovely room for your wedding breakfast and speeches and looks amazing on your wedding photographs! Check out that wall of mirrors! Oh and the amazing spread but on my Anglesey Hog Roast! Without a doubt some of the best wedding food I have tasted in North Wales. The perks of being a wedding photographer hey!

Hafod Farm Evening Reception

After the amazing food and heartfelt speeches we were soon approaching the evening reception. I just had time to get a few more bride and groom wedding photos in before the evening guests arrived. Yep it was raining! I love a rainy wedding photo. It’s probably one of my favourite things about being a North Wales wedding photographer. Tom and Sioned had booked the Four Kicks band for their evening entertainment and they were amazing! Check out some of the moves on the dance floor!

Tower Hill Barns Styled Shoot

A Lockdown Wedding Styled photo shoot at Tower Hill Barns

The wedding industry was hit hard by COVID-19. Many wedding venues, wedding suppliers including photographers found their bulging 2020 bookings diary deplete hourly to almost zero. So…What are we to do? The creative industries all came together to do what we love! We were able to use the time to showcase our products, our skills and have a bloody good laugh whilst we were at it!

Cassie from Cassie M Bridal is one of North Wales’ leading hair and makeup artists. As well as being super talented, she is an awesome lady to have around on your wedding day. Cassie had the idea of creating a styled shoot and asked if I would be involved to photograph it. Naturally I said yes! Having built up so many positive relationships with wedding suppliers, wedding venues and couples over the years, I was also able to offer my input.

We had decided Tower Hill Barns would be our location of choice. Why? Well the venue is a favourite of mine. It is stunning inside and out and the wedding team at Tower Hill Barns were more than happy to accomodate us.

As for the theme…..Well we kind of went on a tangent and just wanted to go super modern and not your usual approach. We were able to call on good friends and a previous bride and groom of mine, Emma and Phill. When I photographed Emma and Phill’s wedding, they were so easy to work with infront of camera, and Emma also has a black wedding dress! Yes!! To add to this, we thought bright neon’s large floral decorations and smoke bomb’s would make for awesome photographs!

Karen Lesley Bridal had kindly donated us 2 white wedding dresses which not only looked amazing on Emma, but also on the Flower Arch provided and designed by Vivid Floral Design.

Whilst Cassie was doing Emma’s hair and make-up, it gave myself and Mathew from Mathew Lloyd Videography chance to starting setting up some photos and bounce ideas off each other.

Natalie from Glamour Events Hire was kind enough to showcase some of her neon backdrops. We set these up inside the old barn at Tower Hill so the neon would really stand out.

Snowdonia Wedding Proposal

Dan’s Snowdonia Proposal – Becky said yes!

An email appears in my inbox and instantly i’m intrigued and excited about the contents. Dan was planning to propose to his girlfriend Becky whilst they were on holiday in North Wales. Although I have photographed lots of weddings all around North Wales, I had never actually photographed a proposal.
Dan and Becky travelled up from London, and once I had got chatting to Dan we were able to run through a few ideas. With Dan not being from North Wales, it was great for me to be able to suggest locations.
We had settled on Llyn Idwal in Snowdonia. This is one of my favourite locations ever. It’s extremely accessible and is surrounded with large waterfalls, imposing mountain tops and stunning views.

The morning of the proposal, I obviously couldn’t phone Dan or make myself known to Dan in anyway as we didn’t want to ruin the surprise. It was just a quick text to tell him I was wearing a black coat and to follow me at about a 200 meters distance until we reached Llyn Idwal.

As with any holiday, and any new place you are going to want to take lots of personal photos and selfies for your own collection. A quick glance over my shoulder to make sure I was still in Dan’s view whilst Becky had no idea what was about to happen.

Once we reached Llyn Idwal, I veered off to a position where I knew I would get a good shot of Dan down on one knee….. I had 2 cameras which were obvious to Becky and anyone else so I was just pretending to take photo’s of the landscape. Whilst I was doing this, Dan was trying to walk Becky over to where I was photographing but Becky was reluctant as she was worried she might get in the way of my “landscape photos”.

Not to worry! Like I say, Llyn Idwal has so many amazing surrounding views, it really didn’t matter where Dan proposed.

Down on one knee he goes, I can’t hear anything apart from Becky’s giggles. It was so windy but then they embraced and I knew Becky said yes!
It was then time to introduce myself and ensure Becky I was not some weirdo with a camera following them around.
