Knee-deep in the chaos of planning your wedding day? If it’s a “hell yes!”, then you’ve probably found yourselves pondering the age-old question, “How many group photos do we actually need?”

As a seasoned Wedding Photographer of over 11 years here in the stunning countryside of North Wales, it’s safe to say I’ve had my fair share of capturing the matrimonial moments of some fantastic couples. And in that time I’ve found that you guys often end up asking me for advice on all things wedding photography, one main query being, “Which group shots do we actually need?”.
So, I’m here to share some wedding photography wisdom with you: while there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, I’ve found that around 10 photo combinations strike the perfect balance, ensuring a seamless flow to your day while capturing the most important shots of your wedding party.
And if you’re in need of some inspiration on those group combinations, I’ve compiled some of my essential group photos below.

Family Matters

Begin with your nearest and dearest—the most important people in your life. Consider capturing moments of yourselves with your children, as well as both sets of parents and any siblings you may have. These are the your everyday people, the individuals who’ve supported you through thick and thin, and rightfully they deserve pride of place in your wedding album.

Matriarchs

Don’t forget about the seasoned veterans of your crew—the grandparents. Some of the most precious memories are made with the older generations of your family, and having lasting mementos of them is invaluable in the years to come.

Squad Goals

Your bridesmaids and groomsmen aren’t just there for show. Snap a few shots with your ride-or-die crew to immortalise the antics and camaraderie that make weddings truly memorable.

Keep It Small

Smaller groups pack a proper punch, so forget about herding up distant relatives for a snap and focus on your inner circle for shots that truly resonate.

Now, I hear you—what about the extended fam? Sure, grand group photos sound smashing, but let’s talk logistics. Herding cousins from near and far ain’t a walk in the park, especially when the open bar beckons.

My advice? Keep it simple and stick to smaller groups. If you absolutely must capture every last second cousin twice removed, schedule a designated time slot post-ceremony. That way, you can get those snaps without encroaching on precious celebration time.

Pro tip: Enlist the help of a savvy bridesmaid or groomsman who knows the family tree like the back of their hand. They’ll round up the stragglers faster than you can say “cheese.”

Ultimately, the quantity of group photos is as unique as the two of you as a couple. Whether you prefer grandeur or intimacy in your wedding photography, it’s essential to savour the day and celebrate in your own way. Entrust the stress and worry of capturing those moments to your wedding photographer, so you can relax and enjoy your day, knowing that every cherished moment will be beautifully captured for generations to come.
